A raft of alternative cabaret stars discuss how video technology has helped shape their careers…
Fantasy, freakery and radical escapism entered whole new worlds in the hands of alternative cabaret and experimental performance artists when video technology erupted into popular culture during the 70s.
Taking us on a digital journey from then to now, This is Not A Dream explores this evolution – showing how performers have used elements of the media, from soaps and talk shows to YouTube and Chatroulette, to spice up their work.
After throwing cake at Rihanna on The X Factor and spitting milkshake at Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, Scottee not only expressed his apparent hatred of dairy, but also became just one of many performance artists who appeal by intertwining their performance art with mainstream culture.
Artists like Andy Warhol, Kalup Linzy and Dickie Beau also feature, showing how the rapid evolution of digital media has allowed them to reach their audiences in more creative ways than ever. And if that wasn’t enough, the film offers a touch of eye candy in the form of James Franco.
This is Not a Dream is released on DVD on 23 January 2014. Available via the http://www.thisisunbound.co.uk.
